Description:
“There is a
vulnerability there, hovering just below the surface. And I want to pick at it
until I expose it. Then I want to kiss it."
Two years ago,
Emily Burnham, had an epiphany about the shallowness of her life. And she
made it her mission to become a different person…a better woman. Out from
under the controlling thumb of her mother, Emily is tasting the real world for
the first time. And she likes it.
Nixon Caldwell has
served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan.
He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best…isolation. It's
certainly the easiest way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is
weighing him down.
When an accident
brings Emily and Nix together, he soon learns he is not the master of his own
fate. Struggling with his own pain, Nix tries to guard himself against Emily’s
charms. He wants her in his bed, but he doesn’t want her in his
heart.
Having grabbed life
by the horns, Emily wants it all. But is she willing to accept just the
small part of himself that Nix is offering? Can she reach the part of his
soul that he has deemed to be Off Limits?
This book is the
follow up novel to Off Sides by Sawyer Bennett. It can be read as a
stand-alone, but I would definitely read Off Sides, because it is just as fantastic and contains one of my all time favorite book couples!
Review:
Oh my, I love my guys damaged and Nix Caldwell is DAM-AGED! But he's got more going for him under that roughed up exterior. I was so excited when I cracked into Off Limits because I was extremely intrigued by Emily in Off Sides, which is the companion novel about her brother Ryan. What really appealed to me about this book is that it's not your typical hearts and flowers. Nix is extreme like many war veterans can be, and he doesn't do hearts and flowers. He does sex. And well, he's pretty damn good at it!
Emily isn't looking for a boyfriend. She's been there, done that, and it didn't end well. So her openness to the no strings attached sex with Nix doesn't line up with your typical love story either. I was a little worried that some huge event was going to spark a change in this arrangement like so often happens. But I was not only surprised, but also completely content with where this story went and how things played out. I'm a strong believer that every story doesn't have to have some massive tragedy that opens the characters' eyes. Sometimes, it's the small things.
This book is not re-telling of Ryan and Danny's story with different couples. In other words, it's not like watching The Hangover II, where you think, "Hmmm.... haven't I already watched this movie only with a different setting?" Yea, I really hate it when stories do that. Emily and Nix have their own set of obstacles to overcome, and at times it's painful to read/watch their struggles. But you won't regret this one! It stands on it's own, and Emily and Nix will captivate you!
Another great aspect of Off Limits is that it continues Ryan and Danny's story from Off Sides in the background. You do not have to have read Off Sides for Off Limits to make sense; however, Ryan and Danny are one of my absolute favorite book couples so if you haven't read it I definitely recommend it.

About the Author:
Sawyer Bennett is the pen name for a
snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start
putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. She is
married to a mobster (well, a market researcher) and they have two big, furry
dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn't have many
weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.
