REVIEW ~ All the Broken Pieces by Cindi Madsen

What if your life wasn’t your own?

Liv comes out of a coma with no memory of her past and two distinct, warring voices inside her head. Nothing, not even her reflection, seems familiar. As she stumbles through her junior year, the voices get louder, insisting she please the popular group while simultaneously despising them. But when Liv starts hanging around with Spencer, whose own mysterious past also has him on the fringe, life feels complete for the first time in, well, as long as she can remember.

Liv knows the details of the car accident that put her in the coma, but as the voices invade her dreams, and her dreams start feeling like memories, she and Spencer seek out answers. Yet the deeper they dig, the less things make sense. Can Liv rebuild the pieces of her broken past, when it means questioning not just who she is, but what she is?

The cover has captured a great meaning In All the Broken Pieces by Cindi Madsen. A car accident leaves Olivia in a coma, then memory loss. Suddenly, she's ready to stop being socially awkward, live her life and start public school. And stop listening to the voices in her head. Or can she? Wait, did you hear that? - Believe me when I say these voices have purpose and their reasoning will straight up blow your mind!

Anytime Olivia asks her parents about the past, her mom would always throw the words "fresh start" at her. And lawdy, her mama was suffocating and a germaphobe. I was scared to sneeze while I read, lol! Sooooo, that leaves us with a very anxious, determined girl to decipher her secret past by digging up the truth.

She knew something wasn't right. Who was she? What happened? Her dreams... are they becoming realities or is it just figments? Is it a blessing in disguise that she doesn't recall her past?

 "It's just that sometimes I feel like I'm living a life that's not mine."

It peaked my interest to read about Olivia's first day of school. With kids her age. I could only imagine as I read the overwhelming shock this girl was in and the insecurities she felt. The sights, the clicks, the cruelty- trying to find where you fit in. Trying to make friends. Boys. To be the new girl, unconfident and confused. Aaaaaaaahhhhh- emotional overload!

I have to do a squeeeeeedoodle here (Eeeeeeee!!!). We have us an attraction, and a fun one full of mystery! Spencer, you suspense me (wink). This boy was great- because not enough books have intriguing, adventurous, hot geeky boys with shaggy hair and glasses AND a bad boy past. Plus he had a calming effect. But so did Liv. I loved reading their development, their personas and their relationship. He also knows how to handle his balls. *slap!* Getchyo mind outta the gutter! Bowling balls that is.

And Clay the pretty boy jock toy. He seemed so sweet and really took a liking to Liv. No holds barred on that one!

All the Broken Pieces is very eccentric and in a league if its own as far as I'm concerned. It's enjoyable, a simple read and will have your interest spiking at every chapter. What happens in this story, the experiences and senses this girl goes thru, the discoveries she makes, her thoughts, her feelings about herself, her memory unfolding, dreams having meaning, it all keeps you reading those pages to see where they lead and how this girl becomes whole again. Props to Cindi Madsen for writing a truly mesmerizing, unpredictable and impressive story. Can't wait to high fives and huggles you at RT 2013!

GUEST REVIEW BY STACIE: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

They say that the cure for Love will make me happy and safe forever.

And I've always believed them.

Until now.

Now everything has changed.

Now, I'd rather be infected with love for the tiniest sliver of a second than live a hundred years smothered by a lie.

Lena looks forward to receiving the government-mandated cure that prevents the delirium of love and leads to a safe, predictable, and happy life, until ninety-five days before her eighteenth birthday and her treatment, when she falls in love.
(Via Goodreads)

***************************************************************
Description (from Shelfari):

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -the deliria- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Haloway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy. But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable. She falls in love.

My Review (5 Stars)

Delirium is a teen romance novel than rises above the same old love story normally found YA Romance. Oliver's writing is vivid and beautiful and chock full of descriptive prose. The story advances quickly without constant repetition. Her characters are well developed and full of personality It's a love story, yes, but it is oh so much more. It is about self discovery, about defining yourself when the world around you believes you should fit a certain mold, about the fear that comes with going against the masses and choosing your own path. Breaking away from your parents ways takes a certain about of courage but breaking away from society, everything you know, your peers...that is where true courage and bravery lie.

The story catches you from the get go but it isn't just about love, it also is about sacrifice, and pain, and the price you pay for love. Whether you have lost a lover, a parent, a child, a friend, you will sometimes wonder - wouldn't life be better without the delirium? Without love? There would be no great pain that always comes with great love. In the world of Delirium you are cured of love. Once you are treated you aren't heartbroken when you lose a husband or even a child. Lena struggles with this. She struggles because she has felt that raw pain of loss and sometimes feels as though the procedure would cure all her pain. She could start over. Other times she feels as though "the pain only makes it better more intense, more worth it."

Lena meets a boy and the boys changes her BUT it isn't the instant perfect attraction. She is hesitant. She is real. She wants him but also wants the comforts of the life she knows. Lena feels as if she is two whole different people and that "I could rip apart any second." Which will she choose? Well I'm not going to tell you but I will say this is a book that kept me guessing. It surprised me several times and also dredged up a lot of emotion and feeling and any book that does that is an amazing read in my opinion.

REVIEW:

First off, I love the fact that this book, this series, is so pure. There is no adult language or content, nothing to really be concerned about as far as inappropriate material. AND it's such a fabulous read that keeps your attention and has you debating over whether you really need to get sleep tonight because you just want to keep on reading! I actually have no problem with adult material and vulgar language; however, it is refreshing to read such an intense story that has such a deeply spiritual root.

While Angel Eyes had it's share of dark material, in Broken Wings poor Brielle is struggling to hang on to her new found faith and everything and everyone that means so much to her. It's really a struggle that many of us deal with everyday, although maybe not quite to the extent that Brielle does. The bottom line, faith is hard. And keeping it through the most difficult times in our lives, and trusting that God has everything planned out and that he is listening, is even harder.  While Brielle finds the truth behind some very important secrets, she also struggles with accepting the betrayals of those she loves the most.

This is an excellent read for young adults and adults alike that will keep your attention and have you dying to know what's going to happen next. It's a clean read with a great message and you won't be disappointed.

Summary from Goodreads:

“I’ve never bowed or kneeled for anyone,” Rafael said. “Never thought I would.” Then he was on his knees. He slid his arms around my waist, tugging me closer and bowed his head.
“You own me, Sophie.” He looked up, his dark eyes hitting me with enough force to snatch the breath from my lungs. “You’ve owned me from the moment I walked into your life in that music room. Then I saw you slipping out the window like the wolves were after you and I knew I wanted you in my life. You’ve wrapped yourself in my heart and mind. I can’t get you out. I don’t want to.”

Graduate opera singer, Sophie Fisher’s life is on fire and it’s not her breathtaking voice lighting it, but the trail of debts her father left behind after he passed away a few months ago. REVIEW ~ Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire (Adult-ish)

Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby wants—and needs—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Great googly moogly!! OH MY GOD! This book was a perfect, hot mess!! I finally got to see what all the rave was about- some negative (unfortunately you can't please everyone) but mostly positive! Soooo it was a gamble, and I hit the jackpot-- and I didn't need no stinkin' poker face!! Pure mutha effin bliss this is. Everything about it! The story, the characters, the narration, the writing. The tension, the craving, the intensity. Everything that can go into the development of an astonishing story is in this book. Holy crap Jamie McGuire, I could totally mack out with your mind right now <-- because that doesn't sound creepy, right? Just don't go all UFC on me... it's just the fandom coming outta me. With that rant said, please note that this is a mature read. It doesn't even touch erotica, it's just a clusterfuck of a relationship and some situations could be perhaps uncomfortable for some readers because of anger management, possessiveness and aggression issues. There was no bullying or physical abuse between a girl and guy. Emotional... slightly. It's just... You'll have to read it and decide for yourself. So I'd say this is a read for ages 16 on up.
They said this book would be addictive. That's not a lie. You get sucked into this book with every word. You don't want to put it down, and when you do... You get the redass and it's all you can think about. Even after you finish reading, it's all you can think about. Its like you want to go all Edward on it and be like, "You're like a drug to me." I don't even want to read anything else for a few days just so I can stay on this book high. I'm telling you this book oozes awesome!
Abby was warned not to fall for Travis Maddox. Heh... That right there gives a girl the automatic green light. But really, how can you resist a hawt, confident, erratic, snarky college dude with abs and tattoos and will kick ass to kingdom come! Dude left me all woozy and stuff. I'd straddle his uh, motor cycle anytime!
Abby worked so hard to turn around her past. Her improved side said to avoid Travis because of the familiarity. She tries. Pulls the friend card. She even busts out unappealing fashion antics. I can't even fathom how hard it is to be Abby when it comes to Travis. Especially when she has to make a choice. However, it looks like those methods backfire and makes her irresistible to Travis Maddox. Home girl plays her cards, but can she deal them? She kills me with some of her antics/intentions. At times, I wanted to go all fight girl on her- but all this leads her in letting her guard down; that you can't let your past predict your future. Unless the past pops up on the street one night. I hate that poor, perfect Parker got caught up in all this. But hey... It is what it is.
Travis isn't just a piece of meat like he leads you to believe. He's got some knowledge to back up those beefy muscles. Something else he has is feelings. And a tough past as well. All that resiliency that Abby tries to conjure up just baits Adam's pursuit and guides him to something he's never experienced. Can you be obsessed and love someone too much? Not without reason. Or is it?
There are times when this story is extreme, but peeps, there are really relationships out there like this. Whether we think it's healthy or not, it works for them. And for them, it's something beautiful. A bet will lead to their Beautiful Disaster and will have you on the read coaster of your life!!
It's kinda funny for me personally falling for Travis Maddox. I don't go for the affliction clad of boys or anyone with an aggressive attitude. But I guess I got to know the real side of Travis vs. the facade I based him upon or any guy with Travis' structure. Hmmm. Well how 'bout that! Just goes to show you, don't judge a guy based on his cover, lol!
Just say yes to Beautiful Disaster and get addicted!! Best book crack ever!!!
Walking Disaster, the second installment of Beautiful Disaster hits the shelves on 4/2/2013. See Jamie's website for pre-order details. I'm cutting splits at how excited I am to read Travis' POV!!
REVIEW ~ The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller
Haven Moore can't control her visions of a past with a boy called Ethan, and a life in New York that ended in fiery tragedy. In our present, she designs beautiful dresses for her classmates with her best friend Beau. Dressmaking keeps her sane, since she lives with her widowed and heartbroken mother in her tyrannical grandmother's house in Snope City, a tiny town in Tennessee. Then, an impossible group of coincidences conspire to force her to flee to New York, to discover who she is and who she was. In New York, Haven meets Iain Morrow and is swept into an epic love affair that feels both deeply fated and terribly dangerous. Iain is suspected of murdering a rock star and Haven wonders, could he have murdered her in a past life? She visits the Ouroboros Society and discovers a murky world of reincarnation that stretches across millennia. Haven must discover the secrets hidden in her past lives, and loves¸ before all is lost and the cycle begins again.
The cover alone is what made me pick up this book... 'What if love refused to die?'
The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller was completely irresistible starting from its early pages. No bait was needed to lure me to continue reading. I turned each page with curiosity and interest. The chapters were short, which made the progression of reading easier for the 400 page book.
Haven, a talented teen in fashion designing had bouts of visions/déjà vu and when a familiar face popped up in the media it turned her body and mind into confusion and wonder. Everyone had theories... Reincarnation, possession, insanity... but which one was right? She lived under the wrath of her grandmother who tried to keep her from the 'demon of lust' (sounds tempting, eh?) but hey- maybe grandmother knew best? Or maybe was the evil one.
The author did a nice job at making her MC, Haven a very curious one, which was pertinent in this story. I enjoyed reading about her visions. At times when Haven saw her reflection it was as if she was uncomfortable in her own skin, which kept me guessing as to what in the world was going on? Not only that, she was outcasted from the seniors at her school because of the gossip, but it didn't stop them from getting Haven to design their dresses. That's where Beau came in.
Haven had a really good support system by her side. Her designing partner and best friend Beau was hot and athletically inclined. Most importantly, he knew fashion. He was sincere and was aware of most of Haven's faults. A true friend, I may say. And I loved him. He was also gay, and I loved him. I commend this author for bringing in such a wonderful supporting character as Beau. He was a wonderful friend to Haven. I'm a proud supporter of LG pride and I don't think there are enough books out there with characters of that status.
Onto another supporting character that didn't play as large of a role. Leah. She was a good friend as well and she had Haven's back. Watch out for the snakes.
Then there was Iain, or could it be Ethan? Say what? Things are for sure though, he was so damn gorgeous and suave that my jaws salivated. His green eyes made me pant, and holy moly, his smirkish smile... I just, I just (deep breaths, deep breaths)! And he carried some deep, dark secrets. You'll second guess yourself, and you want to! His intentions... Were they validated or was Haven in danger? Maybe the cover of this book says it all.
And dammit... then you had a couple villians come in and your like what? And it threw me through a loop, but don't worry, Ms. Miller kept me on track.
Memories unfold as Haven's visions become more prominate.  A journey discovering destiny and hell took place leading to a tragic, yet lovely eternal love story. I was astonished at many of the discoveries. So when you read this, keep calm and let your jaw drop.
REVIEW~ What A Boy Wants by Nyrae Dawn
"Courtesy of watching his mom’s relationships, Sebastian Hawkins knows what girls need to do to get a guy. He has what he considers a PHD in hooking up. When he needs extra cash for a car, Sebastian starts up an online venture as The Hook-up Doctor, to anonymously help girls land the guy of their dreams. Of course, his services don’t offer a happily-ever-after guarantee. He’s seen firsthand getting together never means staying together.
And then he falls in love…
With the last girl he would expect…
Totally not in his game plan.
Suddenly, Sebastian finds himself muddled in the game he’s always prided himself on. He can’t even pick up girls at parties anymore! Why would anyone want to be in love when it turns you into a stuttering, screwed-up, mess with really lame stalker tendencies? Stalking? Totally not his gig.
But the Hook-up Doctor won’t let himself go down easily. He’s always known how to give a girl what she wants and now it’s time to figure out what a boy wants… and he definitely plans on getting it."
The author of What A Boy Wants, Nyrae Dawn had me in an instant just by reading her dedication. Then, I flipped to the first page, and then the next... and before I knew it, I was finished. And I loved it. It's one of those books that just makes you feel good with a little bit of intensity.
Sebastion had himself a little side job going. A hook up doctor (not to be confused with relationship)--- Yeah baby, Dr. Getchyo Groovon in da hizzay!!
"Getting a guy isn't the same thing as keeping him. I can always promise a hook-up, but I can't control if it lasts or not." -Sebastian Hawkins
He had a challengeable client on his hands. She called him out and wanted to make sure he had the goods to back up his $100 advice. She also ended up bringing his worst fear out. Question is- Does he follow his own advice? Or did it divert him into the suburb of Dumb, Boyland? Not only that, but could it be what it seemed?
Hookup Doctor Advice, take 1: "Girls need to decide who they are: either the strong, confident chick who puts us on our ass and still makes us want more, or the shy girl next door who we want to either corrupt or bring home to our parents."
Holy sack monster!!! That's exactly how a guy thinks, lol!! I gotta hand it to him, Sebastian had some pretty solid advice and his clients got a personalized plan of action! I'm telling you, this boy knew his stuff.
"Getting a guy isn't the same thing as keeping him. I can always promise a hook-up, but I can't control if it lasts or not."
Sebastian was sarcastic and arrogant, funny and confused, and he loved his momma. He's all compassionate and sprinkled with powdered sugar to make him sweet as a red velvet cupcake. Can a boy be all of that at the same time? Yes!! He was proof! He had someone that held his heart, but he denied it cause (insert quote marks) he didn't do relationships (exit quote marks). Hmmmm? Defense mechanism? He'd dig himself in little holes with his words and mannerisms and play mind games. Then, it was both funny and sad to read him dig his way out. His dainty gal pal, Woodstock (Aspen) sees right thru his arrogance. And he sees her. She's so adorable, I wanna slip her in my purse and carry her around.
"I think I'm addicted to you. Now that I know I can kiss you and touch you, I don't want to stop." -Sebastian Hawkins *melts*
Everything went good, then the wincing began. And some tears fell- Oh man. *clutches chest*
We got to see Bastian take a path down self discovery. He had a few diversions and break downs, but with a thinking cap and the beats of his heart, hopefully it led him in the right direction. Thing is, he may be too late for his destination. You'll have to see for yourself.
I really enjoyed getting to know the deep side of Sebastian and the relationships he had with his friends. It left me with adoration because I was in a group in high school very similar to theirs, and I miss my boys!!
This was a darling, simple YA lit read and the author stays on track throughout the story. Reading boy POVs are always a plus for me as well, especially when they are broken and evolve into this beautiful being. I look forward to reading more of Nyrae's books, both YA and NA.
And P.S.- What A Boy Needs is out now!! I can't wait to read this one!!
REVIEW ~ Musical Scares by Monique O'Connor James
Musical Scares is a really eerie E short story written by my pal, Monique O’Connor James. The synopsis alone had me wondering if I should even read it. Because I’m a scaredy-cat, and I know Monique’s head. She can come up with some creepy good stuff! But I couldn’t stand not to read it… plus, it gave me a rush- which can be fun when you test your fear.
Six young adults, one haunted house and a melody to remember for the rest of their lives. However short that may be.
When six strangers are joined together to walk through the new haunted house in town, no one is prepared for the coming attractions. Judgments are passed, names are called, and those things just may be the undoing the teens never saw coming.
A freaky mind game with a twisted tune. Would you make it through or fall victim to the Musical Scares?
I can guarantee you next year, if I go to a haunted house, this story will pop back in my memory and I liable bail out in fear. I can tell you two things:
1)   I will never, ever walk into a haunted house again and pass judgment on people. Nah-uh, no sir-eee! IKR?! That would be hard… I mean, I’m only human… but no. After reading this. No!
2)   I'll never step into a haunted house without an accompanying partner, which I will know. You know… so I wouldn’t feel as bad about throwing them in front of something that freaks me out and then haul ass. Kidding. Maybe not. <-- I'm really kidding. I think.
Cowgirl witnesses horrid events of the strangers she accompanies into the house of musical scares. These events had a strategic purpose and were accustomed to each person, including herself. A sort of morbid fate, maybe?
Props to Mo for cueing in some good music while this poor girl craps her boots and learns a lesson in a very traumatizing way.
You've got to check Monique's work y'all. She's a fantastic indy writer and she'll quickly throw you in her fictional world and loop you around all of her thrilling, plotty twists. http://moniqueoconnorjames.com/
I’d like to also throw out there for all you indy authors—Monique partnered up with some really cool authors and established Bayou Brew Publishing.
