REVIEW- Anna Dressed In Blood By Kendare Blake

You can view the synopsis for Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake by clicking the title (via Goodreads).
Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1)

First of all... what a super spooky, grotesque read- a story of guts splattered, lives taken, lives spared, avengeance, and love blossoming. It was goretastic. I listened to this story, narrated by August Ross, written by Kendare Blake while on my commute back and forth to and from work. On one occasion, I almost plowed into the back of a car because I was visioning guts pouring out of a stomach instead of someone's brake lights, lol! Oh well, I guess they are both red.

Anna Dressed In Blood had an interesting take on ghosts gone bad. Most of them didn't even know they were dead. They all pretty much had one thing in common. Retribution for their death. Best thing you could do... stay away from them. Don't go where you have no bizzzznaaas, cuz you will straight up get popped. Most people didn't even know they existed until they met up with one and the ghost made potted meat out of them.

But there was this guy, Theseus Cassio Lowood- er, call him Cas for short. Cas wasn't your typical friendly, high school dude. He was a loner and had no desire to establish relationships because he moved around so much. Here's the thing though (even tho he was an ass at times- but hey, I'm sure killing things that are already dead ain't easy.), he was special... was mortal, had game and would throw a slur or bust out a name call. His thought process rocked. And he will straight up kick a ghost's ass and send them to the afterlife with his gadgety knife. With that said, the boy had a challenge on his hands with a certain 'dead goddess'.

And Anna, poor, poor Anna. The girl had a cruel, vischous death. No wonder she went all haywire and made blood and intestines sling. All she wanted was to wear a pretty, white dress and go to a dance. She was a good girl and that wasn't too much to ask, right? Can Cas give her what she wanted most?

For the record, if I were a character in this story, I'd be crapping my pants every time I blinked!

Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake makes a spooktacular read for the month of October!

BLOG TOUR: UNCONTROLLABLE by S.R. Johannes

Uncontrollable by S.R. Johannes
As Grace recovers from tragedy, her science class is chosen by Agent Sweeney at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to help with research on the new "Red Wolf Reintroduction Program".

While she’s excited about helping with the conservation of the endangered wolves, Grace knows this means being outdoors in the worst winter recorded, in a place she no longer feels comfortable. It also means working closely with Wyn (her ex) and his annoying girlfriend (Skyler), a girl whose idea of getting close to nature is picking silk plants and growing fake plants.

After a couple of wolves show up dead, Grace almost quits. However, when a fellow project team member goes missing, Grace continues the assignment under a renewed suspicion that someone might be sabotaging the conservation program. She quietly begins to hunt for clues.

Little does she know, she is being hunted too.

As you may know, I absolutely adored book 1 in this series, Untraceable. You can read my review of Untraceable here. Uncontrollable definitely lives up to the first book. It is just as packed with action, mystery and danger. Poor Grace is still recovering from everything in book 1, including losing her father and boyfriend, Mo (whom I abso-bloody-lutely love), and all of a sudden she is back in the middle of another dangerous mess. Only this time, she's being hunted.

This time its winter, so people are the only thing trying to kill her. Grace and her friends have numerous close calls out in the snow drenched woods. Between the weather, the wolves, and someone who Grace thinks may be Al, she's just trying to keep her head above water. Making up with Wyn helps but also complicates her life.

I love Grace's bravery and dedication to helping others even when the person she is risking herself for may not be her favorite. Her love of animals and nature are inspiring as is her strength.

There is a FABULOUS surprise, a DANGEROUS surprise, and a very formidable old woman in this book. All of which will keep you hanging on every single word, turning the page as quickly as possible, and never wanting to close the cover until you reach the end. As for myself, I CANNOT WAIT FOR MORE!!!!

Character Interview: Kellen from THE STAR CHILD

Hi Kellen! Thanks for joining us to answer a few questions today! We are so happy to have you.
Brit and Kim:    It must have been really difficult growing up with a father like yours. What do you miss most about your childhood? Do you wish you had a better relationship with your father and brother?

Kellen: What part do I miss? Well, we’re not really talking “a picnic” here, if you know what I mean… I guess the only part of my childhood that I miss was when my mom was around. Everything was better then. Yeah, Stephen and Roger are real pieces of work. Maybe if they weren’t so screwed up, I’d like that, but I gave up on them a long time ago.

B&K:      We learn a little bit about your best friend Gabe in The Star Child, can you share with us a little bit more about what makes him such a great friend?

Kellen: Gabe’s cool. He’s probably one of the most loyal people I know. He really stands by you. I don’t know where I’d be without Gabe as a friend.

B&K: Please tell us Kellen, how hard was it to adjust to your world completely being turned upside down and being tossed into the land of legends?

Kellen: Very. It was one thing when this girl started showing up in my dreams every night, but then I find out that she’s real and could kick my butt if she wanted to. Talk about freaky. The minute she started talking about a prophecy, I thought about having an attorney present. Okay, I was sort of half-joking about the attorney remark. How was I supposed to know if she was a serial killer or not? All that I know is that as soon as Calienta showed up, people started trying to kill me and is not exactly in my M.O. if you know what I mean.

B&K: What do you admire most about Calienta, and if you could, what would you change about the way your relationship began?
Kellen: [Blushes] She’s fearless. Technically, I know she’s not, because I can sense her emotions as strongly as if they were my own. It’s more like… nothing stops her. No matter how afraid she is, she just moves forward. You don’t want to get on her bad side either. She’s got a temper. Just ask my coffee cup.
What would I change? Well… if I could, I never would have left her side, from the moment we met when I was six. We just had this connection. I can’t explain it. Like we were friends from the moment, we met. When I saw her again, she’d become even more beautiful. It would have been cool to just meet her without this whole prophecy thing hanging over our heads, ya know?
B&K: Now, just for fun! If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world (or the Celtic underworld for that matter) where would you go and who would you take with you?
Kellen: I think I’m sort of done with the Celic Underworld, for now, if you know what I mean? I’d like to take Calienta somewhere where there aren’t any paranormal creatures and no one wants to eighty-six me. Maybe the Carribean? It’s hard to imagine faeries in the Bahamas.

Thank you for answering our questions Kellen. We really appreciate you taking the time to stop by. We are suckers for cute boys, and we’d love to have you anytime. *smirk*

REVIEW: BURN BRIGHT - by Marianne de Pierres

Burn Bright: The Night Creatures Book 1
Published: March 1, 2011 by Random House AU
Paperback: 316 pages
Into a world of wild secrets and deadly pleasures comes a girl whose innocence may be her greatest strength.

In Ixion music and party are our only beliefs. Darkness is our comfort. We have few rules but they are absolute . . .

Retra doesn’t want to go to Ixion, the island of ever-night, ever-youth and never-sleep. Retra is a Seal – sealed minds, sealed community. She doesn’t crave parties and pleasure, experience and freedom.

But her brother Joel left for Ixion two years ago, and Retra is determined to find him. Braving the intense pain of her obedience strip to escape the only home she’s ever known, Retra stows away on the barge that will take her to her brother.

When she can’t find Joel, Retra finds herself drawn deeper into the intoxicating world of Ixion. Come to me, whispers a voice in her head. Who are the Ripers, the mysterious guardians of Ixion? What are the Night Creatures Retra can see in the shadows? And what happens to those who grow too old for Ixion?

Retra will find that Ixion has its pleasures, but its secrets are deadly. Will friendship, and the creation of an eternal bond with a Riper, be enough to save her from the darkness?

Listen well, baby bats. Burn bright, but do not stray from the paths. Remember, when you live in a place of darkness you also live with creatures of the dark

Review:
Oh, this was such a fascinating book! An entirely new fantasy world that will completely suck you into the darkness of pleasure and even fear. I was so excited to get the opportunity to review Burn Bright. It was published by Random House Australia and hasn’t been released in the US, so when Dani from Refracted Light Reviews offered to send her copy on “tour” I was so thrilled. I fell for the cover immediately, and the synopsis had me itching to read it.
Ixion is the land of pleasure, but Retra isn’t looking for pleasure. She’s looking for her brother. Every page was packed with interesting turns and I never wanted to put the book down. Unfortunately, I work a full time job and I was moving into my new house. These two things in addition to my husband feeling incredibly neglected meant I had to take a few breaks. And every minute away from Retra and her new friends was fraught with wonder. What’s going to happen next? What does THAT mean?! He did WHAT to her?!?! You get the picture. It took me about 4 days to finish the book (which for me is an eternity!) and every night I had little dreams about dancing in Ixion.
Pierres did a great job creating Retra’s world and her character. Her background as a Seal really defines her, but she also has a bravery and selflessness about her. I really enjoyed reading her and seeing Ixion through her eyes. If you enjoy fantasy worlds, you will absolutely fall in love with Burn Bright!

BLOG TOUR + GIVEAWAY: SNEAK by Evan Angler

Sneak: Swipe #2 By Evan Angler
Release Date: 09/04/12
288 pages

Book Description from Goodreads:
In a future United States under the power of a charismatic leader, everyone gets the Mark at age thirteen. The Mark lets citizen shop, go to school, and even get medical care-but without it, you are on your own. Few refuse to get the Mark. Those who do . . . disappear.
Logan Langly went in to get his Mark, but he backed out at the last minute. Now he’s on the run from government agents who will stop at nothing to capture him. But Logan is on a mission to find and save his sister, Lily, who disappeared five years ago on her thirteenth birthday, the day she was supposed to receive her Mark.
Logan and his friends, a group of dissenters called the Dust, discover a vast network of the Unmarked, who help them travel safely to the capital city where Lily is imprisoned. Along the way, the Dust receives some startling information from the Markless community, opening their eyes to the message of Christianity and warning that humanity is now entering the End of Days.
When the Dust finally arrives in the capital, it seems that all their careful planning is useless against a government that will do anything to bend its citizens to its will. Can the gentle words Logan has found in a tattered, banned Bible really stand against the most powerful military the world has ever known? Can Logan even sacrifice his own freedom, choosing to act through faith alone?

Review:
This was a great sequel to SWIPE! This is definitely a series for reluctant young readers and book lovers alike. There are very few Middle Grade books that I really enjoy, but this series deals with big issues, including politics.
In SNEAK, book 2, Logan and the Dust face some serious obstacles to finding his sister Lily. They have to find where she's being held but first they have to get to Beacon, which is thought to be impossible without having the Mark. Unless of course they can navigate the River, an Underground Railroad type network that assists the Unmarked. The group suffers from all kinds challenges along the way only to find even more challenges upon reaching Beacon.
What I love the most about book 2 is that the suppression of religion in recognized. The topic is present in a preachy or offensive way, but I have a feeling it is going to be a very important aspect of the storyline. The religious theme was already threaded into the story if you knew what you were looking for, so readers of this series should be shocked that Logan finds a Bible or that it will play a significant role in future installments. I think it's a great theme that will reach out to readers of all ages.
I am most excited to learn more about Lily and Peck. These two characters fascinate me! I think their story, both together and individually, are going to really blossom in the next book. I cannot wait to dig a little deeper into both characters.
Overall, I absolutly recommend this book. Especially if you have a youger boy who is reluctant to read. It is a great extension of the first book, has plenty of new elements to keep the reader engaged, and promises a lot more to come!

Blog Tour & Guest Post & Giveaway: POWER by Kristie Cook

Welcome to the POWER: Soul Savers #4 Blog Tour! I'm a little late getting this up today, so I apologize, but we've got some good stuff for you! And stay tuned... there's a giveaway!! Kristie Cook is the author of the fabulous Soul Savers series. Here's a little more about her.

Kristie Cook is a lifelong writer in various genres, from marketing communications to fantasy fiction. Besides writing, she enjoys reading, cooking, traveling and riding on the back of a motorcycle. She has lived in ten states, but currently calls Southwest Florida home with her husband, three teenage sons, a beagle and a puggle. She can be found at www.KristieCook.com.

Kristie has been so kind as to stop by and have a little chat about the challenges of indie publishing with us. So, without further delay, here's Kristie...

The Challenges of Indie Publishing

I love being an indie author. Although I do have a publishing team who we can go to for input, the ultimate decisions are up to my business partner and me. We own the publishing company. We have the control. We decide on release dates, covers, pricing, audiobook studios and narrators, conferences…everything.

Of course, there are challenges to indie publishing, just as there are for every other road to publication. None provide smooth sailing to NYT Bestseller status and millions in the bank. In fact, each path has its standouts who are the exceptions, not the rule. Truth is the average author, regardless of publisher, sells fewer than 20,000 books. For indies, it’s fewer than 1,000. I’ve sold over 115,000 to date, with all kinds of challenges and speed bumps in the road.

I think the biggest challenge for indie publishing, though, is its biggest advantage – the control factor. Yes, you get to decide the cover you like best, but does that mean it’s the best cover to maximize sales? You get to decide the date of your next release, but do you know if that’s the best time of year or month or season to release a book?

I was able to revise my first two books and re-release them, something a traditional publisher would have never done. Was it the best decision? Did we handle the process the best way? I think it was a good decision, but I don’t know if it could have been executed better. I don’t know if changing the price of one book or another is best or not, or if a title that I think suits the book best is the one that will grab readers’ attention. I don’t know a lot.

When you’re indie, even with a small team such as mine, the decisions are all on you. You have to be adventurous with a desire to learn. You have to be willing to test new ideas. Sometimes these ideas fail. Sometimes you learn later that the idea was good but not the execution. And sometimes you win – once in a while, you win BIG. And what worked extremely well for another indie author can cause you to fall flat on your face and vice versa. And when you do fall flat (and you will at some point or another), you can’t push the blame onto someone else. It’s all you, babe. And that makes this path challenging.

I want to say you have to be fearless to be indie, but that’s not exactly true. I harbor a nugget of fear in the pit of my stomach all the time. A little fear is good because it gives you a gut feeling when faced with these decisions. But at some point, you have to swallow that fear down, make a choice and go forward. Learn from the results, whether they’re good or bad, and celebrate the wins just as much as you mourn the losses.

Having control over everything in the publishing process brings on some of the most difficult decisions you’ll have to make in your career. But these challenges allow you to grow, to improve, to progress. You gain new skills and experiences and a tremendous sense of accomplishment that makes everything worth it in the end.
