Finding Time To Write… I NEED YOUR HELP!

So, I’ve been thinking long and hard about this question…
How do I find time to write?
This has always been difficult for me. I (Britney) have this great idea in my head that keeps morphing as I jot down little notes here and there and have every intention of turning these little “jots” into something more. But then… well, life happens. I have to work, then I need to do the dishes, then I need to fold laundry, then I need to bathe the dogs, then clean the bathroom because the dirty dogs got it all dirty (go figure), then I cook/eat dinner, then I fold more laundry and so forth and so on. By the time I’m done with my daily routines all I want to do is sit down with someone else’s book!

So, then I tell myself I will work on it this weekend. Then, the husband has numerous appearances, plans, etc. going on so I fail to actually sit down in front of the computer. Sigh…  So, here’s my question for you guys.
How do you make time to write? How do you get yourself started?

  1. When you find out, let me know. It took a year to write mine and apparently another year to edit... Then will take another year to revise. LOL

  2. Classic avoidance...I should know, I'm the master! Here's what I do. Grab a kitchen timer, a notepad, pencil or pen, and a place to write. Sit down, set time for ten minutes...just start writing--doesn't matter what you write, just write. I think you'll be amazed how quickly ten minutes zips by! Tell yourself, "I'll just write for ten minutes." If it works for me, the man with procrastination issues, and fear of failure issues, and a busy wife, a total of ten kids (not all living under one roof anymore, yea!) and five dogs and one cat, you can do this. Don't think about it--just do it! I wound up writing my YA high-octane sci-fi thriller, Madman Dreams, Book One: Renimated and Book Two: Revenge, ten minutes at a time--literally. I really need to get one of those fancy timers that doesn't scare the beejeezus outta me when it goes off!
